You’ve probably heard about gingivitis but do you really know what it is? Do you know what causes it or what it does to your teeth? Do we know how to treat the problem, or even better, know how to prevent it? If you’re interested in learning more about this issue, please read on.
Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease caused by a buildup of plaque on the tissue that surrounds your teeth. Sadly, this issue can affect everyone. Fortunately, there are a few signs and symptoms you can watch for—including pain and discomfort, and red, swollen, or bleeding gums. However, you may not be able to identify any symptoms, making it difficult to treat the disease adequately.
However, if you have gum disease, there won’t be much you can do from home. In fact, if you try to care for gum disease at home, bacteria could enter your bloodstream. This can be extremely dangerous because once bacteria enters your gum stream, it can lead to issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and even problems with your lungs.
If you suspect that you do have these problems we recommend that you contact our dentist and team right away. However, to avoid gingivitis, please remember to brush and floss properly and visit our dentist every six months for a regular checkup. We can inspect the health of your gums and teeth and tell you about areas you could be missing.
If you are worried about gingivitis, please don’t hesitate to contact DM Family Dentistry at 773.252.5757. Dr. Doris Madrigal and our team look forward to hearing from you soon!
