The enamel layer of your teeth is very hard and extremely durable, yet there are times when a fall or blow to the face can actually crack one of your teeth. This is even more likely if you participate in contact sports without the protection of a mouth guard.

Even if the crack is shallow and doesn’t cause sensitivity problems, you will still need to have it treated and repaired to prevent future tooth decay from developing in the area. A small crack can sometimes be repaired with a filling. However, most cracks require the entire tooth enamel layer to be replaced with a crown.

The process starts with one of our dentists, Dr. Doris Madrigal or Thu H. Nguyen, who will remove the entire enamel layer of the tooth. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth. A detailed impression is then made of the area, which is sent to our dental lab. This will serve as a guide while they custom craft your permanent crown. At the end of the appointment our dentist will secure a hard plastic temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you to schedule a brief second appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your permanent crown will be cemented atop the abutment.
